Restaurant Review: Gabriella's Tea Room

I had the pleasure of hosting my birthday brunch at this beautiful restaurant last Sunday and I'm in love! As soon as you walk into Gabriella's Tea Room you are transported into a fairytalesque world.

They’ve converted a quaint little courtyard into a dining area, covered in ivy, white ceiling drapes, vintage chandeliers and fresh flowers. I particularly love the oval mirror on the wall and the quirky ornaments they've scattered around. There is an Alice in Wonderland garden vibe to it and even though there were no birds, you could almost hear them chirping.

This hidden gem makes you forget you’re in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg. I actually only booked this place because my first choice fell through (there will be a scathing review on this later), but I couldn’t have been happier!

Born in Durban, South Africa, owner Gabriella is of Hungarian, Italian and Norwegian descent. Her goal is to bring you on a journey to her native countries through her food and wow your taste buds with her delicious family recipes.

My experience: We paid a deposit for our large table which was considerately deducted from the final bill. They were very accommodating and let us order from both the breakfast and lunch menus for our brunch. They also told us we could happily have the table all day until they closed. Because they make and sell baked goodies, a "corkage" fee is paid if you bring your own birthday cake. We weren’t aware of this policy and agreed to pay, but they kindly decided not to charge us in the end.

Service could have been a tad bit better as we had some hiccups with a few orders, but they quickly rectified those when brought to their attention... Everything was delicious and they cater for vegan and vegetarians as well. I had the Brioche Cone which was super yummy. Their fresh juices are really good too although they could probably be increased in size.

I really loved the ambience and didn't want to leave. Will definitely be going back soon. Please give them a visit!
